Putting hyperlinks to files in Excel

Inserting hyperlinks to local files in an Excel Sheet

A customer asked how he could make the file list from DDFileCatcher in Excel into a list of hyperlinks. Then he could open the files from within Excel.  My solution was to use the Excel hyperlink function like this:

=Hyperlink(A1, B1)

Column A would be full filepaths, column B would be the text to appear in the link, which could be filename, filestem, filepath or even MP3 title (for music files of course). Columns A and B could be hidden and cell C3 (in this case) could be replicated down column C until the end of the file list.

He was happy with that, but I knew I could build that functionality into DDFileCatcher to put hyperlinks into an Excel worksheet automatically.

Here is DDFileCatcher with the 2 music files on my computer.

Click the “Excel” button and follow the instructions on the dialog that pops up and here are the files listed in Excel with hyperlinks to the files. Here, I chose the catchily titled “Excel MP3 track hyperlink” file property for the first column.

Clicking a link will open your music player and play the track. You can also open a Word document or any type of file from Excel using the links.

Whilst adding hyperlinks to DDFileCatcher, I thought it would be useful to have hyperlink code for OpenOffice Calc and HTML documents. I added those too. For each application, the link text can be the filename, the file stem, the full filepath or the MP3 music track.

Any comments would be appreciated.
